Our wonderful son, LCpl Dustin "Dusty" Fitzgerald, was born on December 2, 1981 and raised in Leoti, Kansas where his dad grew up. Dusty had many friends, and was always a free spirit. He would get an idea in his head, and most of the time he would follow through with what he thought was the right thing to do. He had that kind of smile that would melt your heart, and that laughter when you heard it, you would never forget it. He was a friend to all and so many times would try to save the world.
We moved to Ohio in 1997. Our oldest son Brandon was already out of high school, and Dusty had finished his freshmen year in Kansas. Dusty and the boys were excited about the move, but at the same time it was a scary time. Dusty, Brandon, & Shannon all adjusted fine.
Dusty started school at Wayne High August 1997. He made so many friends very quickly. He joined the R.O.T.C. right away and from there began his career in the military. Dusty at the time wanted to fly fighter jets in the Air Force. One day Dusty came home and said he wanted to be a Marine. He became a great one at that. Dusty gave all he had not just to his country, but to his family, too. We all knew the risk, but we had to let Dusty fill his dream. I know that Dusty did fill his dream and we will always be so proud of him for all he did. We will forever be a Marine family, and Dusty will forever live on through us. He is on a different mission now. We will see him again. It’s not goodbye, just apart for now. Dusty went to Heaven on August 18, 2004. We love you Dusty, and miss you like crazy.
